Tan Cang Tech has successfully accomplished one of its most intricate oversized, super-heavy transport projects: Inter-terminal relocation of 04 RTG cranes across three major port terminals: Giang Nam, Cat Lai, and Saigon Hiep Phuoc.
The pinnacle of complexity lay in executing this project simultaneously with another heavy-lift campaign moving 06 RTG cranes, creating a dual operational bottleneck at Berth B6 and along the entire navigation corridor. From navigating overhead high-voltage powerline vertical clearances to calculating precise tidal windows, this project served as the ultimate test of Tan Cang Tech‘s orchestration capabilities in the specialized field of super-heavy and oversized cargo transport for marine terminals.
Project Overview: Inter-Terminal Relocation of 04 Super-Heavy RTG Cranes

Mobilized Equipment: SG-9587 Pontoon Barge, 2x 3-ton forklifts; 2x Reach Stackers; 10-ton boom truck crane, specialized ramp bridge system, 8 high-capacity ballast pumps, and certified heavy-duty sea-fastening and lashing gear.
Scope of Work for Relocating 04 RTG Cranes:
- Route & Corridor Survey: Deploying speedboats and aerial drones to survey transit corridors, mapping and identifying all terrestrial and waterway navigation obstacles.
- Engineering & Method Statement: Formulating specialized heavy transport plans, occupational safety protocols, ballast management procedures, and contingency risk mitigation plans.
- Load-out of 02 TCM RTG Cranes (from Lines E28, E7 at Giang Nam Port) onto Barge: Maneuvering cranes from their active working lines to the Giang Nam quay and rolling them onto the pontoon barge.
- Barge Transit to Cat Lai and Load-in of 02 TCM RTG Cranes: Towing the pontoon barge from Giang Nam Port to Berth B6 at Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port, followed by discharging (load-in) of the 02 TCM RTG cranes.
- Positioning TCM Cranes into Line Q1: Transferring the 02 TCM RTG cranes overland from Berth B6 into their newly assigned operational positions at Line Q1 within Giang Nam Port.
- Overland Transfer of 02 Sumitomo RTG Cranes (from Line Q1 at Giang Nam Port) to Cat Lai: Due to vertical air draft restrictions from high-voltage overhead cables, the 02 Sumitomo RTG cranes at Line Q1 could not utilize Giang Nam’s internal barge slipway. Instead, they were transferred overland toward Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port to access Berth B6.
- Load-out of 02 Sumitomo RTG Cranes onto Barge at Cat Lai: Rolling the 02 Sumitomo RTG cranes onto the pontoon barge at Berth B6, Cat Lai Port.
- Waterway Transportation to Saigon – Hiep Phuoc: Towing the laden barge along the Soai Rap River over a 26 km navigation passage from Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port to Saigon – Hiep Phuoc Port.
- Load-in of 02 Sumitomo RTG Cranes at Saigon – Hiep Phuoc: Discharging the 02 Sumitomo RTG cranes onto the quay at Saigon – Hiep Phuoc Port and maneuvering them into the designated container yard storage area.
Despite extensive track-record in heavy-lift logistics—particularly for specialized port handling equipment—executing this multi-terminal crane relocation concurrently with the 6 RTG crane transport project from Cat Lai to Cai Mep to maximize Berth B6 utilization under the client’s master schedule proved exceptionally challenging.
Coordinating manpower, transport assets, safety supervision, and multi-party synchronization demanded absolute precision to match tidal windows for 02 simultaneous barges and release the quay on schedule. Thanks to the proven expertise and technical discipline of Tan Cang Tech’s engineering teams, both projects were concluded with absolute safety and success, marking another milestone conquered by Tan Cang Tech.
