Tan Cang Tech Partners to Manufacture Hybrid RTG Cranes Domestically in Vietnam

On May 11, Tan Cang Technical Services JSC (tancangtech) and Huynh Thy Trading & Service Co., Ltd., in strategic collaboration with Mitsui E&S Group (MES) of Japan, held the formal completion and handover ceremony for the first 4 Rubber-Tired Gantry Hybrid cranes (Hybrid RTGs) manufactured directly in Vietnam.

This achievement represents a monumental breakthrough in modernizing port equipment and marks a landmark green technology transfer milestone between Vietnam and Japan, advancing sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly maritime logistics.

Strategic Domestic Manufacturing of Hybrid RTG Cranes in Vietnam

RTG (Rubber-Tired Gantry) cranes are specialized heavy lifting equipment designed for high-density container yard handling. Featuring rigid portal steel frames and multi-wheel steering bogies, RTGs maximize container stacking density across busy terminal blocks.

The Hybrid RTG is a next-generation RTG crane engineered to minimize fuel consumption and extend mechanical lifespan. In this architecture, an auxiliary diesel generator is utilized solely to recharge a high-capacity energy storage battery system, rather than driving the hoist and gantry motors directly under erratic peak load surges as in conventional diesel RTGs.

This design allows the crane to utilize a significantly smaller, lighter diesel engine operating steadily at optimal RPM, minimizing fuel consumption and drastically reducing engine wear. Furthermore, the specialized battery bank captures and stores regenerative electrical energy produced when lowering heavy containers.

Through this advanced hybrid powertrain, the crane achieves a 60–64% fuel saving and a corresponding massive reduction in CO₂ exhaust emissions compared to conventional diesel RTG models.

Compared to all-electric eRTGs—which are powered from the grid via motorized cable reels or busbars, offering zero direct emissions but requiring extensive civil power infrastructure and limiting inter-block mobility—Hybrid RTGs deliver complete yard mobility without requiring costly grid civil works, allowing seamless crane repositioning across container yards.

Beyond cutting fuel and maintenance costs, Hybrid RTGs significantly reduce operating noise and vibration, providing superior ergonomic comfort for crane operators and extending structural asset lifespan—core criteria for modern sustainable container terminals.

The delivered Hybrid RTG cranes achieve a domestic localization ratio of up to 50% for this pioneering crane model in Vietnam. Backed by deep technical expertise and rigorous leadership, the project was delivered ahead of schedule with zero safety incidents.
